BACKGROUND
In 1946 it was agreed that the Wolfe Island community would like to have a memorial park honouring Wolfe Island's war veterans and war dead built. A plan for the community park was developed for a field just south of the village. The park was built later that year and opened with a promise of a memorial gate bearing a plaque inscribed with the names of the island's veterans and war dead be "erected at a later date". At the time they were having "difficulty raising the $2000.00" needed for the project.
In 2022 a group of local citizens got together and began discussions to fulfil the 1946 commitment.
Each year on November 11th our community gathers to honour our veterans in front of town hall.
It was determined that this would be an appropriate place to erect a monument demonstrating our community's
commitment to recognize the sacrifices made by members of our Canadian Armed Forces and their families, especially those from Wolfe Island who perished in the line of duty.
It is our hope that the cenotaph would give the community and our visitors a place to gather, to pause, reflect, to give thanks throughout the year rather than just on November 11th.
In February 2025 Veterans Affairs Canada generously approved funding of up to $25,000 to The Wolfe Island Cenotaph Group, under the Commemorative Partnership Program.
This contribution will assist with the eligible costs of constructing the Cenotaph provided we can match the contribution.
Our group is currently reaching out for support from other organizations and individuals working to match the $25,000 contribution and are confident this will be achieved and the monument can be completed for our 2025 Remembrance Day Ceremony.
